WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Engineers, Surveyors, Technicians, District Officers and Supervisors employed by Local Authorities, Public Utilities and Works Contractors who carry out or supervise works on the Public Highway. The emphasis will be on single carriageways and low speed dual carriageways although other areas can be covered if prior arrangements are made. To enable full participation, delegate numbers are limited to 16.

AIM

To provide an understanding of the legal situation and current requirements of the DTp Traffic Signs Manual (Chapter 8), Traffic Safety Measures and Signs for Road Works and Temporary situations (1991).

To enable members to appreciate the background to the legal requirements for signing roadworks; to establish procedures for planning traffic management; to determine required method of traffic control; to establish signing for single and low speed dual carriageways; to recognise correct and incorrect signing.

CONTENT

There will be at least 6 hours of structured tuition, covering the following key areas:-

  • Outline of legal requirements

i.e. Highways Act 1980 Section 174 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

  • Planning Traffic Management for Roadworks
  • Chapter 8 of the DTp Traffic Signs Manual
  • Signing and Guarding of Roadworks (video and case studies)
  • Traffic Control Measures
  • Procedures for
    1. Surveys
    2. Testing of Traffic Signals
    3. Routine Inspections
