Highway Inspection Courses
HIGHWAY INSPECTION (LEGAL)
The aim of this course is to give someone carrying out Highways Inspection detailed knowledge of Highways Law, Enforcement and certain areas of Highways Maintenance. In order for those attending to obtain best value from the course it is expected that they will have several years experience of highways inspection, or have completed the Technical Course and had at least 6 months subsequent experience.
OBJECTIVES
- To understand the fundamentals of Highway Law and its influence on the management of the Highway for the benefit of users
- To understand the requirements for collecting accurate evidence/data, taking statements and their use in the legal process. To gain confidence in presenting evidence in Court
- How to contribute to Network serviceability and to develop an understanding of the procedures to protect the integrity of the highway
- To develop the concept of 'the public as customer' and how to deliver best value in highways maintenance
To develop a practical awareness of NRASWA and its allied Codes of Practice
- To understand how to contribute to Network safety and the importance of safe working practice associated with work on the highway

HIGHWAY INSPECTION (TECHNICAL)
This course is intended for those carrying out Highways Inspection in their first year of appointment and as a useful refresher for more experienced Highway Inspectors. The course provides a good basic knowledge of all areas of Highways Maintenance and Inspection in which they might be involved. The course includes a site visit at which an inspection will be undertaken.
OBJECTIVES
- To provide basic knowledge of key legal considerations that affect highways and the duties of the Highway Authority
- To provide a basic knowledge of the materials, components and techniques used in construction and maintenance of the highway
- To be able to recognise common failures of highway construction and understand the possible causes

CITY & GUILDS 6033 HEALTH & SAFETY - UNIT 301
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
All those who are required to work on the highway and/or carry out surveys as part of their job. Unit 301 (Health & Safety) is compulsory and must be completed before delegates can progress for assessment on other C&G 6033-300 Units.
AIM
To give delegates an awareness of the hazards and risks associated with carrying out Highway Inspection duties and the procedures in place to protect them.
To give delegates safety training input to enable delegates to go forward for 301 assessment
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:-
- Explain their responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant regulations
- Discuss areas of potential danger associated with their job and the procedures in place
- To carry out a straightforward risk assessment
- Explain the correct reporting procedures.
- Successfully complete the 6033 Unit 301 Assessment

CITY & GUILDS 6033 - UNIT 311 ASSESSMENTS
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
All those who are responsible for carrying out Highway Safety Inspections on highways that are maintainable at public expense. All those being put forward for City & Guilds 6033 Unit 311 Assessment. The course will also be relevant to administration and supervisory staff responsible for managing inspectors or monitoring & recording their findings for both planned & reactive maintenance.
AIMS
To provide an understanding of the need to inspect publicly maintained highways and the importance of doing this.
To provide an understanding of the local Highway Asset Management Plan & the national Code of Practice for Highway Maintenance Management.
To prepare staff due to attend City & Guilds 6033 Unit 311 Assessments.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the programme attending delegates will:-
- Have a full understanding of what is required of them to achieve the City & Guilds 6033 Unit 311 qualification

CITY & GUILDS 6033 HIGHWAY SAFETY INSPECTION - UNITS 301 & 311
WHAT IS THE PROCESS
Desk Top Review:-
- Review of your systems and procedures before 311 pre-visit
Pre-Visit:-
- Our Assessor will meet with you/your senior staff to review your procedures and documentation,to make you aware of any gaps and agree how these are going to be filled for the puposes of the training and assessment
Unit 301:-
- This covers the necessary training in the morning which is followed in the afternoon by unit 301 assessments
Unit 311 Training:-
- A training programme which can be LANTRA Certificed (Optional) to ensure that your staff are aware of your systems/procedures/local HAMP and the requirements of the CoPfHMM
Unit 311 Assessments:-
- Theory and practical assessments.
